Native New Yorker and multi-talented artist Jennie Harney has become one of the most respected young artists on the scene by peers and industry professionals alike. Performing since age four, Ms. Harney attended the renowned LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. Then, after winning 1st Prize in Bertelsmann/Sony/BMG/Random House’s “World of Expressions” competition as a songwriter she went on to study at and graduated from AMDA (the American Musical and Dramatic Academy) NYC.
In 2010 Ms. Harney was selected for the Broadway’s Rising Stars concert at Town Hall, NYC where she received stellar reviews and she has gone from project to project ever since.
As featured Vocalist on “Superstar – the Musical” recording and “Fill my Dreams” the album of Family One Youth Outreach in France.
As featured performer for YMCA’s 125th International Anniversary Celebration, Bombay, India and London, England and featured vocalist (The National Anthem) at the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup, Madison Square Garden).
In 2014 Jennie was one of the winners on “APOLLO LIVE 2”, the second season of a televised singing competition on BET.
In 2016 Jennie was ask to play Glinda in the Broadway Music Video “The Oz Project”. A mashup of “The Wiz” and “The Wizard of Oz” commemorating the 77th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz”.
In Fall 2016, Jennie made her Broadway debut starring in the Lead role of Nettie in the Tony and Grammy award winning musical “The Color Purple”. Most recently Jennie joined the cast of Broadway hit “Hamilton” as a universal stand for the 3 Schuyler sisters.
Ms. Harney’ s performance credits include the 1st National Tour of Motown The Musical and was featured in the roles of Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, Florance Ballard, Teena Marie and others . Co-starring roles in regional hits like “Beehive, the 60’s Musical”, “Thunder Knocking on the Door” and “Dreamgirls” and starring roles in Theaterworks USA’s national tour of “We the People” and “Pearl – the musical” for which she has received an Audelco Award nomination for “Best Actress in a Musical” for her portrayal of American icon Pearl Bailey.
“Miss Jennie”, as she is affectionately known by her students, has been a teaching artist with BAMSS Theatre Works since 2004 and has brought the arts to hundreds of kids throughout the NYC Public School System.
Though Ms. Harney’s career as a performer is on the rise she considers teaching, challenging and empowering children and youths to be her ultimate accomplishment and looks forward to continuing to impact the lives of young people.
